Introduction
MapSync ("we", "our", or "the app") is a group-ride navigation application developed by Sumant Mourya. It shows the members of a riding group to each other on a shared live map.
Sharing live location is the entire point of the app, so this policy is mostly about that: who can see your position, for how long, and how to stop it.
Information we collect
- Account information — your email address, and a display name. If you sign in with Google, the name, email address and profile photo that Google provides.
- Location — your device's position while you are in an active group. This is the data other members of your group see.
- Device information — a record of the devices signed into your account, so the app can tell them apart and avoid leaving a stale marker on the map.
- Push token — an identifier issued by Firebase Cloud Messaging so notifications can reach your device.
We do not collect your contacts, your photos, your files, your call log or your messages. MapSync requests only location and network permissions.
Location — who sees it and when
This is the section that matters, so it's stated plainly:
- Your location is shared only with the members of the group you have joined. It is not public, not searchable, and not visible to other MapSync users outside your group.
- Sharing runs while you are in an active group. Leaving the group stops it.
- Other riders see your position on the map and your distance from them. They do not see your address book, your account details, or anywhere you have been outside the ride.
- Your device caches your own last known position locally so the map can draw immediately on open. That cache is on your phone.
- You can revoke location permission at any time in Android's settings. The app still runs; you simply won't appear on the map, and you'll see others without being seen.
We do not sell location data, do not share it with advertisers or data brokers, and do not build an advertising profile from it.
Groups
A group is a private space. Only people who have joined it can see the positions shared within it, and membership is what grants that access — so only share a group's invite with people you actually want to see your location.
When a ride ends, leave the group. That is the switch that stops sharing.
How we use data
- To place you and the other members of your group on a shared map
- To compute the distances between riders that the app displays
- To create and secure your account, and to verify your email address
- To deliver the group notifications you opted into
- To tell your own devices apart when you're signed in on more than one
Permissions
| Permission | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Location (fine & coarse) | Place you on the group map and compute distance between riders |
| Internet | Send and receive group positions, and sign in |
| Network state | Detect when the connection drops so the map can show stale positions honestly |
| Notifications | Group events you opted into, delivered via Cloud Messaging |
MapSync does not request background location for any purpose beyond keeping you visible to your group during an active ride.
Third-party services
- Firebase Authentication — email/password and Google sign-in, plus email verification
- Firebase Realtime data — storing and distributing group positions
- Firebase Cloud Messaging — push notifications
- Map and geocoding services — rendering the map itself
These are operated by Google and governed by Google’s Privacy Policy.
Retention & deletion
- Live positions are transient — they exist to be drawn on a map and are replaced as you move. MapSync does not build a permanent history of your routes.
- Account data is kept while your account exists.
- Deleting your account removes your profile, your device list and your group memberships.
To request deletion, email SumantKushwaha.dev@gmail.com. Requests are actioned within 30 days.
Your rights
At any time you can: leave a group and stop sharing; revoke location permission; correct your display name; remove a device from your account; delete your account; or ask for a copy of your data by email.
Children's privacy
MapSync is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Security
Data in transit is protected with TLS. Access to a group's positions is restricted to that group's members by server-side rules, not just by the app. Accounts are protected by Firebase Authentication.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affecting your data occurs, affected users will be notified.
Changes to this policy
This policy will be updated as MapSync moves from development to release. Changes are published here with a revised "Last updated" date.
